How can we help student film-makers prepare for a digital world?

The Project

We were asked byNew York University Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Experimental Media Center to run a workshop for their digital media students; a mixture of young game designers and budding film makers. Paul Stabe and Loki English ran a crash course in non-linear narrative and behaviour change, asking students to brainstorm, conceptualise and storyboard a narrative for a fictional YouTube campaign.

The students were divided into two groups - one that would encourage young adults to drink more vodka and one that would encourage them to drink responsibly. The students explored locations, social situations and potential events that might involve heavy drinking and to map out a non-linear narrative that keeps the viewer engage.

The students were still in their first semester of university, so we designed the workshop as an introduction to working in groups, brainstorming and working to a commercial briefs and as an introduction to creative narrative.
